Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier wanders through Hong Kong

Deerhoof were kind enough to ask if I wanted to debut four solo videos in advance of their upcoming album Breakup Song. These are little films that offer a look at each member in a unique way. The first is tough to beat: Vincent Moon of the Takeaway Shows filmed Deerhoof drummer Greg Saunier as he added a little rhythmic flavor to the Hong Kong nightlife. It’s tough to make solo improvisational drumming both entertaining and funny, but Greg’s just such an entertaining and funny guy on his own that it comes off as effortless here. The scene where he gives someone a drumming back massage for “500 Hong Kong dollars” is a great example of his skill and his great sense of humor.

Breakup Song is out Sept 4. They haven’t hit this great intersection of weird and catchy since Apple O and Milk Man.

New Flight of the Conchords: “Feel Inside (And Stuff Like That)”

Flight of the Conchords recorded a a charity song with a lot of NZ musicians. To write the lyrics, they interviewed a dozen or so kids and worked their odd ideas and suggestions into a song about raising money for sick kids. I suggest watching the full video to get all the jokes, but if you want to get straight to the video, it starts at the 5:50 mark.

Portugal the Man cover “Don’t Look Back In Anger” at Lolla

I had heard Portugal the Man covered Oasis’ “Don’t Look Back In Anger” at Lollapalooza, but not that it was part melded with their original song “People Say.” It’s an incredible cover (the only kind they do) and one I wish I could’ve seen. The cover starts at the 2:26 mark.

On a sadder note, PTM’s gear was stolen shortly after Lollapalooza. You can check out their gear list here. They’ve recovered their van and trailer, but no gear as of yet. If you see any of this stuff pop up on ebay, guitar stores or pawn shops, email the band. More details can be found on their website.
